Smoky Mountain String Band
Featuring Smoky Mountain Boy Charlie Collins with Mike Webb and featuring super slap bass player Kent “Superman” Blanton
Friday, August 29th at 7:30PM
When it comes to old-time Dobro and Banjo playing, Mike Webb knows all about it, and he should, he learned from longtime Roy Acuff sideman and Opry member Pete “Bashful Brother Oswald” Kirby. Webb continues the mountain music style along with longtime Acuff guitarist Charlie Collins who continues performing at the Grand Ole Opry. Mike Webb went to work in Grand Ole Opry member Wilma Lee Cooper’s band as well as Jim and Jesse and a host of others. Mike and Charlie recreate the sound of Roy Acuff’s Smokey Mountain Boys. There’s the songs, the stories, and the comedy and an evident friendship between the two. The instruments themselves are part of history as they once belonged to Oswald Kirby and were used to back Acuff on his recordings and live shows. He states “Charlie and I are delighted to bring our music back to the Arts Center of Cannon County; you won’t find a more receptive crowd anywhere.” Along with super slap bass player Kent “Superman” Blanton, they are a one of a kind group.
The Smoky Mountain String Band educates the audience in old-time music traditions and shows how it evolved into modern day country music. This show is a must-see for anyone who loves traditional country music or grew up listening to the Grand Ole Opry.
Ticket prices are $12 for adults, and $10 for seniors, students or groups. To purchase tickets call (615) 563-2787 or 1-800-235-9073.
