From Doug Seroff Author of "Out of Sight" and "Ragged but Right"
Spring Fed CD 104 - "John Work III: Recording Black Culture"- 14 field recordings made by Work in or about 1941, Many never before issued in any form. Stand outs include a stunning orginal vocal and guitar blues by the unknown Joe Holmes recorded in a Macon, Georgia train station, and a previously unheard 1941 version of "Dry Bones" by The Fairfield Four featuring a remarkably supple-voiced Sam McCary and featuring storied basser Rufus Carrethers. There's also a black Alabama sacred harp choir, selections by Middle Tennessee black banjo and fiddle duo Frazier and Patterson, and more. Lengthy, authoritative and infectiously enthusiastic notes by Bruce Nemerov along wiht a deluxe presentation with many fine illustrations help make this one of the classiest historical CD issues you're likely to encounter this year.
